Information about tuition fees

Tuition fees

The tuition fee that you will pay depends on different factors like nationality, place of residence and study programme. Use the tuition fee calculator below to find out which fee applies to you for the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 academic year. The yellow question marks in the calculator explain certain topics.

Tuition fees 2nd study programme (stapelaars)

As of the 2011-2012 academic year, certain changes have been made to the financing of higher education and, as a result of this, the tuition fees. Read what this means for you here.

Tuition fees delayed students (langstudeerders)

As of 1 September, the rule is: if you are enrolled in higher education, you are allowed to utilise 1 extra year paying the regular legal tuition fees after the standard duration (legal study load, see below) of both your bachelor's and master's degree programme. We call this year an extension year. If you want to determine the total number of academic years yourself, you add up all the academic years in which you were registered as a student in higher education on 30 September. You should include all of your enrolments since September 1991. You can also check the number of years on My DUO on www.ib-groep.nl. If you have already used the extension year, you will start paying the delayed student fees as from September 2012-2013:  the legal tuition fees plus €3,063 (increased legal tuition fees). This is the amount for the 2012-2013 academic year. The extra amount will be determined annually.

Use the delayed studies calculator below to determine in which year you will actually be a delayed student.

Which years of study will be counted?
On 1 September 2012, the number of your enrolments at a Dutch university in a funded degree programme in the past and present will be added up. To do so, the Central Register of Enrolments in Higher Education (CRIHO) will be consulted to check your enrolments since 1 September 1991. All of your enrolments since September 1991 will be included. We will use 30 September as the reference date for each registration in each academic year. Every enrolment registered in the CRIHO Register as a (full-time, part-time, or work-study) student in a funded degree programme in the Netherlands since 1 September 1991 on the reference date of 30 September will be counted as one year. In order for students to determine the total number of years, they should, therefore, add up all the years in which they were enrolled at a Dutch university on 30 September.

What is the legal study load?
The standard study load is set at 60 European Credits per year. This means that:
For a bachelor’s degree programme of 240 credits, the standard duration is 4 years;
starting from the 6th year of enrolment, the delayed student fees apply.
For a master’s degree programme of 60 credits, the standard duration is 1 year;
starting from the 3th year of enrolment, the delayed student fees apply.
For a master’s degree programme of 90 and 120 credits, the standard duration is 2 years;
starting from the 4th year of enrolment, the delayed student fees apply.

Does this rule apply to you?
The delayed student rule applies to all students who enrolled in Dutch higher education in or after the 2011-2012 academic year and who are paying the legal tuition fees. Furthermore, it only applies to enrolments in funded degree programmes. Funded degree programmes are funded by the government. Enrolments at private educational institutions do not count when determining whether or not you will have to pay the delayed student fees, since the legal tuition fees do not apply to such institutions. Enrolments at educational institutions outside the Netherlands do not count either.

When does the new rule come into effect?
The law stipulating the new rule came into effect on 1 September 2011, but the increase in the legal tuition fees for delayed students will apply as of the 2012-2013 academic year.

Exceptions and tuition fees loan from the DUO agency
If you believe that exceptional circumstances apply to you, you should contact your student counsellor (see contact details).
If you receive an additional year of student grants in relation with a physical limitation, the delayed student fees are postponed for another year.  Besides for the ‘usual’ loan from the DUO agency, in some cases you can apply for a loan specifically for paying your tuition fees, the so-called tuition fees loan. Please contact the DUO agency for more information.

Payment possibilities 2011-2012

There are several ways to pay the tuition fees. In June 2011, you can choose a method of payment in Studielink via a digital authorisation. You can choose from the following methods of payment. Please note: for these options you need to have a Dutch bank account number.

  • Direct debit payment in 1 instalment. The direct debit will take place around 25 September 2011.
  • Direct debit payment in 6 instalments. We charge a one-off €24.00 administration fee, which will be withdrawn with the first instalment. The instalments will be debited around 25 October 2011, 25 November 2011, 25 January 2012, 25 February 2012, 25 March 2012 and 25 April 2012.
  • A third party authorises HU to debit their account for lump sum or direct debit payment.
    The above conditions apply.
  • A third party acts as guarantor for the tuition fees and signs a statement to this effect. Halfway August the guarantor will receive an invoice and should transfer the amount within 30 days to the HU University; in the name of Stichting Hogeschool Utrecht, account number 25.67.32.760, stating the student number. See below for payment from abroad.

Digital Authorisation

If you are enrolled at the HU University, you need to pay tuition fees, even if you’re only doing a work placement or internship. The payment of tuition fees is arranged through Studielink with a digital authorisation. In Studielink, you can choose from several methods of payment, as mentioned below. In June you will receive information by email on how to arrange the digital authorisation and how to complete your enrolment. Please note: in order to use the digital authorisation for the payment of tuition fees, you need to have a Dutch bank account number. If you do not have a Dutch bank account number, payment takes place by invoice.

Responsibility for payment

Sometimes, the collection does not go through correctly, which can mean that no money is transferred into our account. Should that happen, you, as the student, are solely responsible for the timely and full payment of your tuition fees to the HU University.

Excemption from tuition fees

Are you registered as a student at the HU University and planning to enrol in a course at another educational institution? In that case, you are entitled to an exemption from tuition fees (or part thereof) at the other institution. To apply for the exemption, you will need a Proof of Payment, which can be obtained from the HU Enrolment Office on your request. It should be handed in at the other institution. Are you already registered at another educational institution and planning to also enrol in a course at the HU University? If yes, you will need an original Proof of Payment from the other institution and then hand it in at the HU Enrolment Office (see contact).
Please note: you are only eligible for the exemption from tuition fees at the HU University if both the HU University and the other educational institution charge you the legal tuition fees. If the other institution charges you the institutional tuition fees, you will not be eligible for any exemption from tuition fees at the HU University.

Have you applied for enrolment in a minor at the HU University? If so, please send an original Proof of Payment that were paid to the other institution to the HU Enrolment Office (see contact) before the start of your study programme.
