Diploma

HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht offers approximately 70 different degree courses at Bachelor’s level. You can enrol into a Bachelor’s degree course if you hold at least a HAVO or MBO level 4 diploma, or a foreign diploma at least equivalent to HAVO. Bachelor’s degree courses usually take four years, but individual students may take longer. You can arrange your application for enrolment at HU and for your student grant through Studielink. To find out how to apply in Studielink, go to Applying in Studielink.

Applying without diploma
If you want to enrol into a Bachelor’s degree course at the HU University, but do not hold a diploma eligible for the degree course of your choice, you may still be admitted. To be eligible for admission, you have to take an entrance examination, the so-called colloquium doctum. The faculty will administer this examination. You must be 21 or over to be eligible for the examination. You can apply for it by selecting ‘colloquium doctum’ as your previous education in Studielink. Please visit our international website (www.international.hu.nl) for information about foreign diplomas. To find out how to apply in Studielink, go to Applying in Studielink.

Diploma not verified in Studielink
Do you hold a foreign diploma or a diploma that cannot be verified in Studielink? In that case we need a certified copy* of the diploma (certificate) and the list of marks of your previous education. Please send these documents by regular mail to the HU Enrolment Office. Please mention your name and student number or name and date of birth on any documents you send us.

* Certification means that you take your original diploma and/or list of marks back to the relevant school of your previous education. There they will  make a copy of the original and put a stamp and sign on the copy. You can also have certified copies made:
- at the Student Service Desk, Hogeschool Utrecht, Oudenoord 330, Utrecht
- at the Student Information Desk of your faculty where you will be registered
- by a civil law notary (this is not free of charge)

Enrolment into an advanced year

When you apply in Studielink, you can indicate whether you wish to start in an advanced year (second year or after) or want to be enrolled into the main (post-propedeutic) stage. After indicating which degree course you want to take (step 3), look on the right side of the screen and click ‘Click here' to change these details, for instance if you wish to start in a higher year or at a different moment if this applies to you. In the following screen, please un-tick the box next to ‘start in first year’. Please note: you will only be allowed to start in an advanced year if you have already attained the First-Year Qualification for the same degree course and have obtained permission from the faculty.

Numerus fixus (quota)

For several degree courses, admissions are limited. These are called numerus fixus, or quota, courses, which means that candidates are randomly selected. If you want more information about the lottery, please visit the website of DUO. Please contact the applicable faculty for more information.

Verification of identity

The first step in Studielink is the verification of your personal details. Studielink compares these details with the Gemeentelijke Basisadministratie (GBA). If this verification fails in Studielink because you do not have a Dutch reseidence address, or for any other reason, Studielink will notice you by e-mail. In that case, please send a copy of your passport, ID card and/or residence permit (no driving license) to the Enrolment Office. Please mention your name and student number on any documents you send us.
Students who are not EEA nationals will in most cases need a visa to come to the Netherlands (The European Economic Area consists of all European Union member states, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway). In some cases, students will also need a residence permit to be allowed to study in the Netherlands. To find out how to apply in Studielink, please click here. Please visit our international website www.international.hu.nl for information about the visa and residence permit procedures.

Language tests

A HAVO, VWO, or MBO level 4 diploma serves as proof of your proficiency in English. Please click the links below to apply for one of these tests.

If you pass the test, you will receive a Statement of Results. You can send HU a Statement of Results automatically, using institutional code 9942.
